I found a one kilometer stretch of road that is quite flat and am sticking to it for the first month or so. This has eased the frustrating of my HR spiking quickly and my having to slow to a walk to get it in line. I live in Alberta so I also wanted to mention that I have found that the cold has added to problems keeping my HR down. When it is -20C, with or without a wind chill, I have to work harder.
