I only drank water the whole ride and I just could feel my legs were completely drained of energy and my HR was going much higher on flat segments than it usually would.

Not Helpful 88 Helpful 818 1 week ago i decided the i would start the 2 week test to fix my fatigue,heavy legs,lack of performance and low resting heart rate.I was 10-15carbs total per day max,felt fatigued still but ok, on the 3rd day i was horribly fatigued with low rhr, the 4th day i was violently sick with vomiting and diarrhea and a very low rhr. i increased my carbs to 30-40 and now im back to just the bad fatigue on day 8 today. diet wise im coping fine and never really hungry at all. i have lost maybe 2.5kg(70.6kg). my current body fat yesterday was 16.8%. i have started taking a mens swiss ultivite and 2000mg of fish oil this week aswell.

The 2 week test improved many, many of my symptoms and I felt quite great. Although I was eating very few carbohydrates before, the test was hard to me. During the second week the symptoms from the first week disappeared but eventually I’ve started suffering from another issues related to my gut. I suspect it’s because of too many dairy mainly the Camembert (125g/day) that might have impact on my gut bacteria. After the test I wasn’t even able to tolerate very small amount of even medium glycemic food so I’m nourishing like during the test (6 weeks now). But as the time passes I’m feeling more fatigued and my gut problems seems to be bigger now.

Moderate exercise is considered to be 4.5 METs. (A MET is a rate of energy expenditure, similar to watts.) Vigorous exercise is 7 METs. Calorie consumption is: 1 calorie (technically, kilocalorie) per kilogram body weight per hour per MET.

    Should I stay on the TWT longer? Is this normal? Am I going to wake up one day and the weight just melted off overnight?

    Also, generally speaking, for any given distance race you want to be competent at 10-15 BPM below race pace, BPM at race pace, and 10-15 BPM above race pace. This is a derivation of what I stated in terms of distance in the above paragraph. (In the case of the marathon, race pace is 10-15 BPM above MAF).

  2. Did the speed reductions happen while you were doing the Two-Week Test?
    One of the key issues that we have not addressed satisfactorily is when to train at or under the MAF HR. This goes to answer the sentiment of many of your questions.

    Eat more often. Make sure to read that third word – eat more often, not eat more. Think of it this way: if you only have 5 pieces of celery you can eat in a day (not recommended; just an example), you don’t want to eat them all for breakfast. You want to space them out to keep from being hungry. Along the same lines, you’re likely not eating a lot in these two weeks. So eat less, but eat less more often. It’ll keep your stomach from thinking it’s hungry.

    My question is this: 1) do you ever recommend for people to do a “carb step down” program to minimize these symptoms? 2) am I missing something? Why the severe nausea? Any pointers for the next time I try the test?

  4. These signs and symptoms are typically not worrisome. The reason your MAF pace falls during the TWT is because during regular aerobic exercise, the body fuels itself with both fats and sugars. But when there are very few sugars in the tank, your MAF pace represents only the amount of fats you consume–so it’s slower. This doesn’t mean you are “getting slower”: once the test ends and you begin introducing carbohydrates into your diet, your body will begin to use both fuels again, and your speed will reflect that.
    I feel much better in many respects and I was already pretty healthy and careful about those things.

    There have been many cases where a T1D has tried this, with no known ill effects. On the contrary, it tends to reduce their need for insulin.
