Can I ask, what about chicken stock cubes? Each one has about 3g of carbs, and sugar. They all contain this, there is pretty much no no-carb stock cube or one without sugar for chicken stock.

However, as long as it has no added sugar (for example, I use a protein powder that has 2g of sugar per 150g serving) it should be fine for your regular diet, but not for the Two-Week Test.

  1. Snacking is where portion control gets iffy. To avoid that handful of nuts turning into the entire bag, measure out your snacks beforehand. Then when you’re hungry, you grab a little baggie or container that’s the right serving size and that’s that. You know exactly how much you’re eating.

I am optimistic that I am on the road to recovery now. One last question: Since I found this site and have started my recovery efforts, I have been training strictly at or below a MAF heart rate of 180-age-5 (=136), because I am clearly recovering from injury. But should I actually be using 180-age-10 (=131)? That is, should this be considered a “major illness/injury”?

    Generally they are too processed, although the real problem is that soy sauce or tamari is rarely made of soy. They’re made of weird stuff sometimes. If you can stay away from it during the two-week test (or find real soy sauce) then that’s great. If not, well, a few dashes of it on your noodles isn’t really going to hurt. Just remember, the more exceptions you take, the less effective the two-week test will be.
    My biggest worry has always been my weight…. I use to play professional football and when I stopped, I also stopped working out and so I gained weight so fast…!!! But with the 2weekdiet, I was back to shape in no time at all!!!

    It’s no wonder the diet industry is one that never runs out of steam. Diets work in the sense that they make you super aware of what you’re doing; they can make you as mindful as a mountain climber. But, then why are so many people still trying to lose weight?

    The two most important things you can train for a race are (1) knowledge of your race pace, and (2) knowledge of the race duration. This is why Phil used to train great triathletes such as Mark Allen at a near-exclusive MAF pace. As long as their bodies were comfortable with those two things, they would perform at top level.
    Antibiotics can possibly lead to a temporary weight gain by disturbing the gut microbiota and increasing the amount of energy we absorb from food. This is still speculative for humans but it’s another reason not to use antibiotics unless you truly need it.

    I am about to start the Two Week Test and as a vegan, I am reviewing some larger sources of protein. I have a good list but wanted to clarify. Tofu is okay, meat substitutes as long as there is no added sugar and it is not starch based, tree nuts (no cashews) and seeds, and vegetables. What about TVP or Textured Vegetable Protein?
