I just realized today that the cold symptoms may be masking the other reactions I should be looking for. For example, I usually have a slightly runny nose, and would like to see if diet changes affect that. And I don’t know if my tiredness and foggy head this week are due to the diet change or illness. Is it mostly after the TWT that I need to monitor any health changes and reactions to foods? Because I would hope this cold is gone by then. Or are my test results too muddled now?

Hi there, I started the 2 week test a couple of days ago and as a long distance runner I’m finding it very hard to get in enough calories. Could Spicy Snacks Cause Stomach Issues? Usually, when cravings happen out of the blue, it’s because some kind of significant stress entered the picture. It takes at most 2 days for your stored carb levels to go down, so it’s unlikely that’s just happening to you. Stress changes the body’s hormonal makeup in such a way that it stops burning fats, so it wants more sugar. But if the diet is relatively sugar-less, which means that there is relatively less stored sugar in the body, cravings can become unbearable. So I would look for some kind of significant stressor that entered the equation in day 10 or 11. The answer, of course, is to remove it and see if you can re-start the test.
What sleep, dining out, alcohol, and other habits might have to do with it.

When training a lot, it’s perfectly fine to increase the proportions of carbohydrates in the diet. Although you probably did go into ketosis, the body has to develop its abilities to produce ketones. It’s not going to produce them in a high volume (or develop the machinery to burn them) if you don’t train that in particular.

You’re experiencing some of the classic symptoms of overtraining syndrome (OTS). Read more in this article here, and also peruse the comments. Any questions you might have may already be answered there. Your experience sounds a lot like parasympathetic overtraining, which is the late stage of overtraining. Specifically, those symptoms usually happen when the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), which is designed to get you up out of bed and kick up your activity levels, is absolutely exhausted. So, the parasympathetic nervous system (which is designed to calm you down and put you to bed) just takes over. Before the TWT, I was at a healthy weight, with little to normal body fat. However, I was basically on a low-carb starvation diet at about 800-1000 calories per day, and could not lose any more weight no matter how much I restricted calories. Most of my calories came from protein and vegetables, with very little fat. My carbohydrates were also below 100g per day, usually from fruit or a protein bar.
Essentially, what does it mean if my symptoms don’t change after two weeks? Very low levels of thyroid hormone usually indicate an autoimmune reaction to the thyroid gland itself. This means you’ll have to take thyroid hormone supplements orally, usually the stable form T4 (Levaxin), which your doctor can prescribe for you. Your body will transform this into the active T3 hormone when necessary. The supplement dose should be adjusted so that you reach normal hormone levels (TSH, T3, T4) and sufficiently alleviate symptoms – though a few people feel best when keeping TSH slightly below normal.
