  4. You’ve got it, basically. There’s just one thing: if you’re doing an anaerobic training session and you’re out of sugar, your anaerobic energy system is already pretty tired. While refueling is going to keep you going for a little bit longer, you aren’t going to be getting as much training of as high a quality as before. For that reason, I usually call it a day when I get tired doing intervals.

    After the first month, implement a high intensity interval training exercise program, at your speed. If walking really fast is high intensity for you, do that once or twice a week. Most importantly, begin a high intensity weight training program once a week, like the one in Doug McGuff’s Body by Science program or Fred Hahn’s The Slow Burn Fitness Revolution. The purpose of this is to increase muscle insulin sensitivity and build muscle mass, which will translate into a higher metabolic rate, lower insulin levels, and more fat burning.

  8. I was always a little overweight my whole life. I come from a family of heavy people, and when I was growing up, all of our family get-togethers were based on food. It didn’t matter if it was a happy gathering or sad, people were always offering each other something to eat (and you don’t want to insult anyone by not eating—it’s a part of my Cuban culture). Plus, with five siblings and my mom working a lot, fast food was one of our go-tos.
    My boyfriend and I are going to *attempt* the two-week assessment over the next 14 days. He’s training for a marathon and I’m just trying to lose weight. I’m taking the laboring oar on preparing all of our meals and had a few questions:
