That answer is incredibly helpful. I went out to run yesterday and the day before. I’ve been running using the MAF heartrate for a month, but day before yesterday I just could not keep the heartrate down and had to walk much, much more than usual. No big deal. I figured it was still a good workout. Then yesterday, I really felt lousy and woozy on my run. Today I took a rest day. I’m curious what will go on tomorrow. This is quite the learning experience.

Because of the way the body responds to stress, stress itself can be a contributing condition to weight gain, poor aerobic function, and carbohydrate intolerance. It might be the case that the deterioration is in part due to the “fear” that you mention at eating high-fat foods. Simply stated, nuts, avocado, and olive oil were never the reasons someone got fat—they were always the reasons that someone’s appetite became quite well-regulated. But if the test is becoming stressful to you, stop. Don’t do it.

  4. Greetings, it has been extremely motivating reading all the comments. I have enjoyed reading and listening to Dr. Maffatone and have elected to take the test. Wish me the best, I will keep you posted on my experiences and most importantly my results.
    It wasn’t a particularly stressful time and that was partly why I chose that time period. Day 1 – Public holiday – On call (phones only). Day 2 looking after young (baby) grandson, but that’s usual (1 day per week) – tiring but enjoyable. Followed by 2 not particularly busy workdays and then at the beach (holiday) for 3 days. I think I stopped the day after that.

After the Two-Week Test (TWT), your body will be hypersensitive to foods that don’t agree with you: in fact, the symptoms will show up when you’ve eaten 1/10th or 1/20th of the amount necessary to create adverse help effects.     I have now been training MAF for 5 weeks and eating basically no processed carbs and sugar at all. I have lost 9kg (down from 94Kg to 85Kg) and I was fairly lean as it was (191-192cm tall). However I am really enjoying being lighter and have enjoyed the reduction in body fat. I can see I was storing too much fat on my body even if it was not that obvious and I am working hard on getting my body to try and burn fat as its primary fuel. I never have had any issues with carb intolerance and could eat plenty and feel ok. My questions relate to does MAF promote never eating any carbs again (besides vegetables and fruit), and ideally just increase my level of ketosis. I ask because today for the first time I really hit the wall on a 2 hour training ride. Left on an empty stomach at 6am and didn’t eat till 9am after I got to work , showered and got settled at my desk (standing desk). I only drank water the whole ride and I just could feel my legs were completely drained of energy and my HR was going much higher on flat segments than it usually would.

    If you are on any medication – especially insulin – the doses may need to be adjusted when fasting. Discuss it with your doctor first.
