Health Topics I am a little confused regarding burning fat and racing MAF heart rate. I understand that training 80% at MAF develops your aerobic system and by reducing processed carbs, sugars and increasing good fats you are training your body to use fat as it’s primary energy source. Is there anytime you would tap into blood glucose or muscle glycogen stores if you remained below or at MAF HR? Or is the point in becoming efficient to use more fat as energy and hence maintain your glycogen reserves for later in the race? Why does your body stop using fat as an energy source and switch to glycogen if you remain at or below MAF? Especially as you have pointed out your body stores unbelievable amounts of fat compared to glycogen (which also needs to be stored with water).

She says a moderate approach that boosts weight loss and comes without apparent side effects for the healthy individual is the 12-hour intermittent fasting approach. An example is having your first morning meal no earlier than 7 a.m. and your last evening meal no later than 7 p.m. Thus, 12 hours without food or caloric beverages consumed gives your body time to rest from eating and promotes fat burning without unnecessary hunger that daytime fasting can cause.
In one study, mice who ate within a 9- to 12-hour period put on less weight and had lower fat mass than mice who ate at all hours.[14] Another study found that obese people who ate 25% of their daily calories on one day, then ate normally the following day (aka alternate day fasting method), lost up to 13 pounds over an 8-week period.[15]

Probably, it’s that your body is used to burning sugar. That’s what your mind is used to, as well. It always feels weird when you’re burning fats. When you do a 3 day fast, for example, you feel weird even when you’re not tired. Of course, once burning fats becomes the new normal, that weird feeling should stop.

That said, intervals and anaerobic training are sugar-fueled endeavors. We can’t get around that. So, what I do is (1) make sure that my metabolism likes fats better than it likes sugars, and (2) shift around my nutrient intake slightly so that it tends towards the kind of fuel I’m going to be using any given day.

Thanks for the great article. I would love to hear your thought on Lyle’s Rapid Fat Loss Diet. I know after all it is just a huge deficit but is the best way to create a large deficit while preserving muscle mass is to consume mostly protein like his approach? If we create the same deficit e.g. Eating 800 kcal/day but having carbs and fat will we lose more muscle mass than just getting those calories from protein only?
